FAQs

  • Online therapy is still a relatively new approach to therapy despite it’s surge in accessibility during the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic. Researchers are trying to determine if it is as effective as traditional in-person therapy and who is best served by the use of this technology. The preliminary results are promising.

However, best practice suggests that online therapy is NOT appropriate for those with active suicidal or homicidal ideation, active manic or psychotic symptoms, or other severe mental health diagnoses or symptoms.

Using technology allows for greater convenience in service delivery. However there are risks in transmitting information over technology that include, but are not limited to, breaches of confidentiality, theft of personal information, and disruption of service due to technical difficulties

You will need access to, and familiarity with, the appropriate technology in order to participate in the service provided.

Further, you will want to be sure to use your own equipment and a secure internet connection to communicate. Not doing so could result in a compromise to your privacy. Please note that any information that you enter into an employer’s computer or device can be considered by the courts to belong to your employer.

Lastly, there is a chance that connecting through technology may lead to:

~a lack of emotional warmth, connection and energy that is often experienced with the presence of being in-person

~an absence of nonverbal communication cues that may provide important information which could inhibit or impede appropriate treatment
